Reduce the Appearance of Wrinkles, Age Spots, Unwanted Hair, & More

As we get older, our skin begins to lose its smooth, youthful appearance. We begin to develop wrinkles, age spots, and scars can become more apparent. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a cosmetic treatment used to improve the signs of ageing, including wrinkles, age spots, and more.

Alternatively, some health conditions or prolonged exposure to the sun can create an uneven skin tone and visible damage. IPL uses light energy to target a certain colour of the skin and even its overall tone.

What Can IPL Treat?

Intense pulsed light therapy is typically used to reduce or remove:

  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Birthmarks
  • Varicose & spider veins
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Redness
  • Scars & stretch marks
  • Unwanted hair

How Does Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Work?

Intense pulsed light energy is used to target a particular, often darker, colour in your skin. The skin is heated to encourage the body to rid itself of unwanted cells, which is typically the thing you are using IPL for.

The device targets darker colours while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected, which means more radiant skin with less recovery time.

Intense pulsed light devices send out more than 1 wavelength of light at a time, so it can be used to treat multiple skin conditions simultaneously.

A handheld device will be used to deliver IPL therapy to the treatment area of your choice. Most patients report the procedure as not being overly uncomfortable, with the sensation similar to being snapped with a rubber band.

After treatment, you may have mild swelling and a stinging or burning sensation similar to a sunburn. Cool, moist cloths can help ease any discomfort during the recovery time, and it should subside within a few days.

You may need several sessions of IPL to notice a significant difference. Your doctor will help create an appropriate treatment plan with you to ensure you’re getting the results you hope to achieve.
